This Saturday I pulled everything I could get out of the cockpit and painted it. I used the Rustoleum Hammered paint in bulk. I thinned it 8oz per quart of Xylol per the directions which proved to be perfect.

This stuff has a learning curve on how you spray it. Too little and you don't get the even hammered apearance, too much and you get what looks like runny metalic paint. There seems to also be a trick to getting the most even coverage. I found that by spraying a medium coat all over and then waiting for about a minute and spraying another medium coat, I had what it took to make a nice even hammered finish. This stuff changes before your eyes so it is difficult to tell what you have until it is done doing it's thing.

Overall it was not hard to figure it out. The results are fantastic! I love this stuff! It seems to be the perfect thing for interiors as it has some hidding ability and seems to be easy to learn how to spray it.

This stuff was able to be handled in about an hour after spraying (95+degrees Saturday). I just let it sit yesturday and cure. It seemed to change a little more from Saturday night till this morning. It took on more of an even hammered finish. I suspect that was the remainder of the solvent evaporating causing this.

I checked for durability a little and this stuff seems to be pretty tough already. Others have reported great toughness so only time will tell.

Here is the finish it produces:

Here are the shots of all the parts I pulled and painted:

Now I am going to take the interior in three steps. I want to do the baggage area first, then the mid section, then the forward section. This is so I can mask, scuff, clean and paint before the surface oxidizes and looses its grip. I will do this in the evenings this week. I don't think I would have enough time in a session to do more than that in one evening session.

Hope the inside goes as good as the removable parts! If it does, I will be a happy man! Wish me luck!

Thanks Spike,

The best part of this interior paint job is that the paint and thinner cost me about $35. Can't beat that!

That looks awesome!

Let us know how the durability goes. Did you spray a test piece or anything like that?

Thanks,

Nope, just puckered up and shot the first parts. I did the baggage compartment side parts first so they would be easy to clean off if I made a mess.

Here is another closer pic of the finish this stuff makes:

Phase 2 of 4 complete on painting the interior. Still looking pretty good. Allot harder to get this done correctly with all angles, hidden areas and while leaning over the side! That and the overspray blowing back in your face! :o This was not as even as the removable parts but still very acceptable.

Phase 3 of 4 complete.

Last night I was tired and it was hot so I set out just to mask off the center of the cabin for spraying on another day but after I was done masking, I said to myself, it will only take 10 more minutes to spray this thing so that is what I did. Still looking pretty good. It is not perfect but I don't know if you can get perfect with all these hard to reach places like behind the small bulkhead flanges and under the arm rests. If you try to get these areas, it is way too easy to get too much on adjacent surfaces.

I did a test and I can get to some of the impossible places with a small foam roller. The rolled on paint looks almost as good as the sprayed. After a few days, I'll get in there upside down and find some of the missed spots. The beauty of this stuff is that it hides repair work well.

I am going to put UHMW tape over these areas to prevent the seat back and the adjuster tang from tearing it up.

Interior Paint Complete

Post by Brantel »

Calling the interior paint done...

I finished everything up this weekend that I felt that I could do before starting the finish kit.

Did not paint the rollbar or the inside of the aft top skin due to the canopy work that is to come.

Also did not paint the fuel selector plate because I am not sure what I am doing with that yet.

Reinstalled everything possible back into the interior. Installed UHMW tape on the seat back bar front and top surfaces. Hard to tell the tape is even there. Hope it helps that area from getting trashed so quickly in the future.

I have not drilled the anlge to the back of the panel yet because I will be needing an extended panel.

Partain's driver called and said that he is on his way with my finish kit!

Brantel that looks great! Did you prime it or just spray it after prep? I haven't decided what to do for my interior yet.

The paint can directions say priming is unnecessary but alot of my stuff was already primed and some was not. Used the same self etching Duplicolor spray can stuff on the unprimed areas and scuffed the older primed areas with maroon scotchbrite before spraying this paint.

Personally, I think this stuff would stick to anything but someone should do a test and prime some scraps, paint them and paint some unprimed scraps and wait a couple weeks and see how good this stuff sticks.

Today I spent my day moving a friends business computer system to their new temporary un-flooded location. I couldn't help but notice that the door frames in the new location were painted with paint like this. Seemed to be holding up well and I'm guessing they had been painted quite a while ago looking at the rest of the office decor.

I do believe I am about convinced.

That looks great!!!

For those of you that are coming to this stage, I'd like to make a recommendation. Wait until you have completed virtually all possible work on the interior to paint.

I painted mine at about the same stage but ended up painting most of it again because of the wear and tear during the on going building progress.

Next project I will do all of the building up to the panel, including canopy, fuel pump, latches, etc... then take it apart to paint. I found you get in and out so many times that it is hard to protect during building.

Since I had to paint it again, I found it was easier to take everything apart and paint and put it back together.

Life goes on a tangent!

Post by Brantel »

Well,

Last night after Church, my wife lays a big one on me that was not in the life plan.....

We are having another baby!

At first I was in complete shock and saw my airplane in flames burning and melting before my eyes.

Then I gathered myself together. Took out my airplane planning and budgeting spreadsheet and hacked it all up.

Bottom line is that I am still going to have an airplane if it kills me. It will have a used engine and a minimal VFR only panel that is capable of shooting "practice" VOR/ADF/LOC/ILS based approaches so I can stay current with my instrument ticket. It will also have a two axis AP because the Dynon solution to that promisses to be so cost effective.

It will still be a better equipted airplane than most spam cans I have rented.

Later on 8-10yrs down the road, I will revisit the airplane and see about upgrades if I want them at that time.

Partain's guy is delivering my finish kit tommorrow morning.

Get this... My wife and I spent untold thousands at the fertility doctor to have our first two kids. Now here it happens all by itself. Must be Gods will I suppose.

I've heard it said that after the pressure is off, nature takes control. I have a friend at work whose wife could not have kids so they adopted. After the adoption, she was pregnant within a few months.

Don't worry about finishing the plane. If it is meant to be, it will get finished. A VFR plane is still a fine thing. With another kid, I'd worry more about needing a -10
