tail wheel chock.... this one is done. I like it. recessed areas on the bottom didn't increase slip resistance over 50 lb on smooth concrete but will have some beneficial effect on rough concrete or asphalt. calculations indicate this chock will handle winds up to 40 mph. quick 10 seconds install time.

Steve,

Very awesome! One idea I just had was sort of a tailwheel chock I could attach to my hangar floor. Right now I used a piece of blue painters tape to let me know how far back to pull my plane. Occasionally when distracted I pull it back too far, luckily never leading to any dented metal. This concept exists for garage's, where there is a mat you can lay on the ground which prevents your wheels from going too far back, and your bumper wiping out your mountain bike :) Maybe you could design something that could be attached to the hangar floor, but also not too bulky that it would be a tripping hazard when the plane is pulled out?

Glad to see you participating over here at RB. Hope to see you at Osh at our Black Otter Prime Rib Night!

thanks. I like prime rib. this chock is for traveling use. small, lightweight and rotates with the wheel. one chock will secure the aircraft in a 40-mph wind and very quick to install, 10 seconds. I'll think about your idea. If you have an idea for it, sketch it and post it so I can better understand.

a friend keeps asking for a gust lock attachment for a bungee cord at the inner elevator hinge location for an RV14. I took a quick stab at it. not sure if this will work.

still needs some more work but this is the general idea. need to add a slot for rivet clearance on the lower side. I'm still not sure if this will work but at least it doesn't scratch the paint.

gust lock attachment at elevator hinge location. the geometry of this part is interesting. a lot going on for such a small part, but I still do not know if this is a viable method.

rudder gust lock attachment for tail wheel aircraft using a bungee. this little widget may actually work. I was able to attach with elevator past horizontal and I can get even more clearance with an additional cutout (see photo). so, there is hope for this. rudder fashioned with rope gust lock because I only had one side for the bungee. bungee coil is too close to the elevator but that can probably be corrected.

rudder gust lock attachment for tail wheel aircraft using a bungee. fitted to a RV9.

this is looking pretty good. attached both sides. the bungee is too long but tie it up. this is only for securing the rudder as it does not secure the elevator.

elevator gust lock hinge connection. need a widget to attach to the outer hinge area to secure the elevator gust lock in place. not sure exactly what it should look like at this moment.

I will begin a fit check with this but it is just a concept to understand.

elevator gust lock hinge connection.

this turned out to be better than I imagined. I didn't have a bungee for it, so I just taped some rope and put the plane outside while I did a brake job on my daughters' car. after 8 hours of getting blown around it looks good.

elevator gust lock hinge connection.

this first concept version work better than I thought it would. nice! this gust lock arrangement could be good for tail draggers that need some flex at the rudder because of the tail wheel locking mechanism.

I'm trying to understand how to improve it, but I can't at the moment.

elevator gust lock hinge connection.

I must have some small interference here because it does not fit flush with the edge. I need to get a borescope in there to understand the geometry.

Sized for RV9

looking at the RV6, geometry is different so some adjustment to be made.

elevator gust lock hinge connection.

I believe there was some paint interference because when I wiggled the connector it fully engaged. so, I'll open the groove .005 inch to allow for tolerance and take a look at it. here are some photos of the connector fully engaged. it is a line to line fit.

elevator gust lock hinge connection. fit check to the RV14. I learned the RV14 horizontal stabilizer aft spar is thicker than the RV9 aft spar. I made the adjustment.

Oil filter drain back support...... since I usually get some oil running down the sides, I thought I would design a drain back support to prevent that.

Oil filter drain back support... maybe something like this

needs a couple tweaks but I think this ultimately will work but needs a testing with some oil firstly.
