seatback bar storage tray.... bigger. removed the intermediate size and install the bigger, 5 minutes. then fill it full of stuff. pulse meter, batteries, ear headsets, barf bags, etc. pulse meter still works! I also threw in a paper towel with aftershave to give the cockpit a pleasant aroma. my wife hates this stuff if I wear it but always comments the airplane smells so good with it. go figure. my weight is going down but slower. weight goal is 167 lb. I'm eating one meal a day (22:2 OMAD, I like it and I can feel the natural ketones when they hit) and running 4 miles. weight of this plastic tray turned out to be 118 grams. the bike gets 55 mpg if I keep it on two wheels.

seatback bar storage tray.... yet bigger. how best to extend? going for a run. I haven't eaten anything for 37 hrs and I am amazed how good I feel. I'm going to push it if I can. this is the first time in my life I have ever gone without food when I was healthy. it's a body experiment. always testing...
I'll pretend I'm a starving cave man running after his food with a spear or my glock.

*******
edit: this run level was medium to low (4 miles), but I noticed something about 10 minutes into the run, a huge increase in aggression. I felt it, a chemical release. it must be an evolutionary testosterone boost or something like that. I didn't expect that. so now I know what a starving cave man that is running after his prey has in his blood steam, testosterone. also, if you plan to do a lot of walking at Oshkosh, only use polyester socks, no cotton. you will thank me later. my weight is continuing to drop. goal is 167. I started at 185 several months ago but was 200 a couple yrs ago. my wife walked 7.5 miles this morning, so she beat me. I am beginning to see my sluggish youngest daughter Amanda beginning to move more. example comes from the family leader.

seatback bar storage tray.... yet bigger. is there any reason not to use the entire seatback empty space between the stiffeners? going for a run, 21C and light rain... perfect.

seatback bar storage tray... checking multiple seat positions and clearance to the tray with a small test print. looks good enough to print the full size. it will be a large increase in volume.

what do people really care about? the speed of the RV14, the efficiency of the RV9 or the acrobatics of the RV8.... nope, they really care about the freak'in double cup holder. I should have printed mine in red.

seatback bar storage tray... glued and assembled. instructions say wait 24hr for glue to dry so I'll do that. the fit was good, but I put a 10 lb box on top. pulling around on a single half I managed to put a small crack in one the fillets, so I added some doublers. that fillet needs to be a lot larger. this is a prototype piece for testing. the bottom flat has some oil canning so I might do something about that if this testing is positive.

seatback bar storage tray... installed for testing. I forgot to weigh this part, but the computer says it should be 275 grams. that's about a half a pound and equal to what I am losing each day. :)

weight is coming down. goal is 167 but I'll blow right by that. new goal is 163. let the ponies run!

seatback bar storage tray... clean up. increased the fillets on the fwd side by 10x. added a slight break in the bottom to prevent oil canning. doublers on the fwd face if needed. I don't believe they will be needed.

I started my HIIT (high intensity interval training) today. that is full out sprinting for 1 minute then rest until the heart rate comes down and repeat. the last time I did that drill was in high school... 45 yrs ago. HIIT is supposed to increase growth hormone to burn fat faster. it's another test for me to see if it's true. I do this at about hr 20 after my last meal to make sure I am primarily running on ketones. I had some strange looks today.

time to switch from OMAD to TMAD in order to add some calories, build strength and extend the milage and have a soft landing at 163 lb. the body is an amazing machine. I am amazed at how it adapts to adverse conditions. that's the real beauty and strength. just like airplanes, excess weight is its biggest enemy if performance is the goal.

seatback bar storage tray... 325 grams (I originally guessed 275 grams, but I forgot to count the splice piece). prototype #2 looks good and passed the flex test before bonding. a very nice stress free fit. let it cure for 24 hrs. it has a nice soft edge. the break edge in the bottom solved the oil canning issue.

I filled prototype #1 with misc. "stuff": handheld radio with antenna attached, coax for the radio, pulse meter, all in one tool, fog wipes, head lamp, ear plugs, batteries, etc. I was able to sort thru it from cockpit and retrieve it if needed. note, I have only needed my hand held one time and I was on the ground. I will see what happens when I hit some bumps. will stuff go flying out of the tray? I filled the baggage area for Oshkosh and noted that the tray and the rotating nose wheel chock holders do not interfere with my baggage so far. I still need to add a clothing bag. the cockpit area is clean and there is nothing between the seats or against the sidewalls. so far, I like it.

seatback bar storage tray... popped prototype #1 out and installed prototype #2 in a couple minutes. filled it full of stuff (added my warp phone charger) and took off for the clouds to find some bumps. I found some, frequency response must be OK because nothing even tried to move. everything in the tray seemed to just sit there, quiet as a mouse. the evolution of this tray started small.

I don't know what is going on with my eyes, they seem to be getting better and better. I was telling my wife on our normal 2.5 mile walk each evening last week that my eyes are improving even more. a couple a months ago I passed my drivers license eye exam without glasses for the first time in 40 yrs. now, they are even better. I am able to count the number of dew drops on a blade of grass as I walk by. I am still required to wear prescription glasses for flight but I needed to take them off yesterday in order to see better. this is weird to me. I can also read a book at 6 inches away. maybe the weight loss or the running is doing it?

RVPlasticParts is running at full capacity, 7 printers. I don't want any more business. :) I'm going for a run. my weight and endurance are meeting the goals I set 4 months ago for the upcoming half-marathon in Sept. if you're going to run with the big dogs, you have to be in shape.

I think I found the secret to weight loss.... eat less, exercise more. forget the keto diet, it's not healthy.

a clean method to change a filter. place magnetic funnel underneath, rotate the filter until the seal is broken and oil is flowing, wait a couple minutes for oil to drain into the bucket. hold the funnel with the left hand, rotate the filter off and tip it so any remaining oil flows into the funnel. support the funnel with a rag or paper towel to catch any remaining oil from the return line.

seatback bar storage tray.... now also installing to the pilot side. so, I will have two of these. I currently have the nose wheel chock on the pilot side, and it was easy access in Waukesha, even when I was loaded, so I like that. what I didn't like was that the rope for the chock is difficult to store and falls out easily. the tray on the co-pilot side is big and gave me no trouble when loaded and I even accesses stuff in flight such as my cell phone charger. I will just throw the chocks in the new tray and see if the access when climbing out is OK. attached are some assembly photos. it is a stress free fit, and everything lines up perfectly. I will have a lot of storage capacity and it will not be too far from the aircraft CG.

my youngest daughter kicked ass in Engineering school this year and landed her first Engineering co-op job. I'm both happy and sad, another one spooling up and soon will be gone.

airborne again and testing these cargo bays. time to find some lead shot and increase the loading. if I put 20 lb in each, that is 40 lb total. does that count against my baggage area weight limit? :)

gust locks are hot. this is the first .125 inch elevator gust lock web thickness version I have sold. it's stiff. going on a business trip, catch these when I return. who would have ever thought we would be printed complex parts like these elevator gust lock from polycarbonate?

seatback storage tray... load test. I could not believe how difficult it is to find lead shot. when I was a kid in Kansas I reloaded shotgun shells and purchased items from TG&Y or just about anywhere. I ended up buying some lead weights from eBay that I measured in grams for a total of 20.14 lbs. I loaded that to the tray bench prototype for a check fit and then loaded it in the installed tray. I'll let it sit there for a while. 20 lb should be 50 percent of the plastic material ultimate carrying capability. not bad for a tray that weighs 325 grams (.72 lb). if the static load test is successful, I'll rate these trays for a 6g load. so that would be 20 lb / 6 = 3.3 lb.

another printer will be coming online this week. that will be a total of 8 printers. printers are operating 24/7.

seatback storage tray..... the stresses look reasonable and within limits for an ultimate 20 lb loading. this would be when the tray is loaded with 3.3 lb and pulling 6g. the model is helpful when looking for the max stress in discrete areas. in this case the max stress is in the back corners, where the cap ends meet the vertical support. the max stress on the 3M dual lock adhesive is at the lower outside edges as seen by the reaction forces. the reaction force in the bond joints is within limits.

seatback storage tray..... day 1, 20 lb load. everything is looking good. unload it and go for a flight then reload the 20 lb weight. you will learn more about the capabilities by testing in the actual installed condition, such as always load the lead ingots with the fat side up, so they are easier to grab. :)

rudder gust lock. I probably have the most time with an external trailing edge rudder gust lock on this aircraft, and a lot of it tied down in Kansas winds. how does this rudder look? no cracks, no loose rivets, perfect condition. max speed during Vmo testing = 192 ktas, rock solid. light rudder paint, light weight rudder trim wedge and light weight strobe (major players because these are at the trailing edge), no glassed-in end caps, built to plans (additional glass adds weight) .... and faired rudder cable attach bolts (no vortex shedding from fasteners, minor effect). :)

and never a loose jam nut in 9 years (since new) because they are installed with Loctite or maybe superglue. loose jam nuts may be a factor for flutter. so far, I am very pleased with this rudder.
