December weather in Ohio hasn’t been great for biking, but today was an exception. I took my beater bike with mud tires to the mountain bike trails and had a blast. After nine months on OMAD, I’ve noticed a subtle boost in energy this month, with more sustained, steady power. Some sources say this happens as the body cleans itself and the pancreas becomes more efficient at maintaining proper blood sugar levels. I burned over 1,500 calories on the bike and ate three pieces of fruit. Normally, I’d stop for my favorite burger on the way back, but I wasn’t hungry—if I’m not hungry, I’m not eating. I had a Cliff bar in plane and thought about my favorite flying and biking adventures, realizing the ones that stood out were when I explored the unknown and biked for 3 or 4 days. Today was just a regular day of local flying, mainly for exercise and fun. The high temperature at John Bryan State Park was 8°C, and it was perfect. For clothing, use layers as you can shed them as needed, and have some glove options. The mud tires were great on the trails. You will definitely need to work harder when using mud tires as rolling resistance is greater. I had some minor thigh burning on the way back to the airport—that’s exactly what you want!

The easiest way to remove dried mud from the tires is by riding through a wet snow pile. Larger mud tires can make the bike tip easily when the kickstand is extended, so I’ll print a couple of new kickstand ends to have different options.

I enjoyed a nice 30-mile bike ride today, though it was windy when I arrived, with 17-knot winds gusting to 25. Temperatures in Springfield reached 9°C. No photos this time since I forgot my phone—and my music. I stopped for my favorite burger and spent half an hour chatting with a friendly lady at the coffee shop. By late afternoon, the winds eased, and the airport grew busier. I’d parked in my usual spot, directly behind a LearJet, applied my gust locks as usual, and used the Kansas nose wheel chock. When I returned, the LearJet was gone, my nose wheel had fully rotated, but the chock turned with it and held the plane securely. I love it when everything just works! All in all, a very nice day. I didn’t ride this particular bike today, but I did fit the kickstand extension—it fit perfectly, and I only needed to print one.

Exercising in Zone 2 for three hours a week has been shown to be great for your health, and honestly, it just makes you feel good.

I slipped out of the airport under low clouds into the bright sunshine of Columbus, IN. Known as a biking destination, the couple who arrived before me in a twin were already pedaling away. I soaked up the beautiful weather and enjoyed a fantastic meal at Ramen Alley—definitely a five-star spot. The meal was $19, dessert $10, and the flan was made by the Japanese owner. Afterwards, I savored a great coffee and some protein balls. As I rode off on my bike, I told the lineman to top me off, and he said I could pay when I got back. Being the only plane left on the tarmac, I jokingly showed my abs to the lonely FBO hostess, catching her smiling ear to ear as I left. She might have thought I was a comedy act, but at least I made her smile. All in all, it was a really good day.

I need to figure out how to reattach the plastic glare shield to my radio display.

It was nice to be able to ride in February in Ohio. Some snow traces still on the trail to a couple of villages. Only about 30 miles but my legs felt like it was 60. That's what to expect after a hard winter and no riding. A new people bridge to bring more to the bike trail. I found that I like a couple pedal spacers. I tried two, then one, then back to two. It made a huge difference. These were just some alum washers I had in the hangar, but the steel version arrived today. These need to be stainless steel. I had my favorite burger and pudding and that made me feel good. It seemed weirdly foggy by the fuel pumps. The temps were really good and when the heat comes, I will miss days like today. A perfect day and the days are getting longer!

I cut 4cm off the handlebar width from the Zizzo speedster. A couple proper pedal spacers.

It was cool weather today. When I departed in the late afternoon it was 1C. The lobster gloves did not give me any problems in the bike cockpit. Some warm soup midway helped. 30 miles today and the handlebars are a keeper.

The beaver dam is broken and the pond is draining. They might have left for some other place. They do that sometimes.

The oil looks OK at 75 hours.

Exercise is primarily for the brain. Being sharp and fit can be the difference between going and not going.

As I departed the house, I wondered if this was the correct day for a bike ride. The temperature was supposed to rise to 6C where I was headed. I used the plastic bag trick on clipless road bike shoes. Eye protection cleaned and checked, good to go. After I returned and upon filling the tanks, I noted no rivet tank blisters after 13 years. I used the syringe/proseal trick before painting, as I had some weepers that I could not seal with the green Loctite method. I hit all the tank rivets with the syringe/proseal. I turned out the be a very nice day. 50+ miles today on the bike and the legs felt good.

Nice weather today. The MBT surface was just right. The alum welds on the beater bike are doing fine. I ate too much.

For MBT's I do three things: 1) drop the handlebars, 2) drop the seat, 3) drop the tire pressure.

There was some rain in the morning, but the weather turned pleasant with a high of 25°C, though a bit windy. I put on the bug blades since the insects are back. The new front brake on my bike works great and was only $19. I hadn’t planned to ride 60 miles today—it just happened.

Piqua/Hartzell Field to Troy, Ohio, and back, visiting the Waco Museum – 40 miles. It was a junk food kind of day. I had Chinese deep-fried chicken, which, while definitely junk food, was good. Upon returning home, I had strawberry cake. I also made sure to get in my push-ups and pull-ups.

I visited the Waco Museum because I enjoy it there. I even had a successful takeoff and landing in their simulator. I have a tailwheel endorsement, and it felt almost like flying a real airplane (nose dragger, like a fighter jet).

I removed one standoff washer from my pedals, leaving just one for the clipless. The trail from Piqua to Troy is beautiful, and there were plenty of people out enjoying the nice weather. It doesn't get much better than this.
