Curiosity got me. I checked out Lyco's website for Y-anything, nothing. Even on their list of engines, no 'Y's
I have my A&P 'cheat-sheets' (information I gather on a constant basis) I have no listing for Y Lycos on my chart (which is a Lycoming publication from 2006)
Maybe someone from Van's knows, or maybe it was a typo. ????
Still curious.

I just got word back from Rick Galati. He is installing a "Y" in his -8. He tells me it is Lycoming's designation. He is told it was chosen by them to more easily differentiate its experimental class of engines from the "X" competition.
So there ya have it!
What's in a name?

...and to add a commentary, I have never, EVER seen the A1B6 less than $35 large prior to this!
Wassup widdat?
This is about EIGHT THOUSAND dollars less than the last time I checked!
I wonder how this will affect the 390 pricing now? I am betting that we have the 390 to thank for bringing the A1B6 engine pricing back into reality. The 390 is priced at around $32 and using it was a no brainer. Why would you install a less powerful and more costly 360 in your plane when you could have a more powerful, less costly 390! It just makes good sense... until now.
I don't expect Van to carry the 390, but if the cost were a couple of thousand more instead of 5 or 6, it would be more sensible and I would swing the delta for the 390.
The way things sit right now, that A1B6 is a real good option for me! I am glad that I have another year to sit on this one.
Dunno?
