ECI Cylinder recall - bummer
ECI Cylinder recall - bummer
One of the cylinders on my O-360-A1A are in the "A" group of cylinders in ECI's mandatory service bulletin. Here it is getting a new one installed. The engine only has two hours on it and it is already getting a new cylinder

Sorry to hear that. You could use this as an opportunity to check out the inside. How long since the engine was delivered? I would be interested to know how it looks (as far as corrosion). One of the big questions that I don't think has been answered well is how long an engine can sit after deliver without damage being done.

Engine was pickled per Lycoming instructions after the two hour test stand run where it proved it was putting out an honest 180 HP. This was a little over a year and a half ago; and it still looks brand new inside.Spike wrote:Sorry to hear that. You could use this as an opportunity to check out the inside. nNow it is the mags
I just found out my Slick mags are the ones with all of the problems
Can't I at least get this thing in the air before I have to tear anything else apart because someone that should know better shipped crap out and it got assembled into my engine.
Just a little bit more than frustrated.

Guess my first reply didn't take, sorry. My engine was build up by a very good A&P in Minnesota and I am completely satisfied with his work. What I am not pleased with is the PMA-FAA approved junk that was represented as safe equipment and included in my engine. One of my four new ECI cylinders were replaced and now I am going to have to tear down the NEW Slick Mags every 20 hours. All this and I haven't even started the engine yet.Spike wrote:Who did the engine?
I may very well jerk out one of the pieces of crap and replace it with an electronic ignition; just for a little piece of mind.

Lots of SB out there
Steve,
Thanks for bringing the Slick mag service bulletin to our attention.
After having dodged the bullet with the Superior cylinder recalls, we just dodged (barely) another bullet(in) from Slick. The serial numbers affected start at 0601xxx. Ours was built 2 months earlier at 0511xxx.... whew, that was close!
I can't believe all this SB stuff. How am I going to track all these service bulletins in the future? Will I have to do exhaustive searches on all the components and sub-components (engine/avionics/airframe) as part of the condition inspection? I know I will ... just complaining.
I have an ACK-01 ELT that has a SB regarding sticking G-force switches. I haven't even placed any batteries in them yet (I'm a slow builder). Good thing is that this will push me towards the newer 406 MHz ELTs earlier, but then again, who says they won't be saddled with a SB as well.

I'll ride out my Slicks, and consider a replacement for one of them (sooner than later) with something "experimental".
Edit: .... checked another Slick service bulletin, and this time the serial numbers have been extended to include mine. Arghh!
