Someone has also suggested using the softer "A" rivet, not "AD".
I have had situations where for numerous reasons an "AD" rivet was hard to buck, mostly when it needs to be double flush. or a very long rivet.

We would use a "DD" ice box rivet instead. It is soft when you shoot the rivet, but eventually it is stronger than the "AD" rivet.

Only drawback to the "DD" rivet, you need to have a small heat treat oven to get them ready for shooting. We had a small one(size of a lunchmate cooler) in our shop where we would place the rivets in the oven for 1 hour at 920*F and quench in cool water and place on dry ice to extend the working time of the rivets.

Acceptable Practices - MIL-SPEC 47196A.

You might find some interesting information at the following link:

If you ever watch old History/Discovery Channel films of Spitfires being manufactured in WWII, installing the double universal head rivet was a common practice on the aircraft.

There it is!!!

Page 2 section 3.3.3.4.1 says to use a smaller cupped set and you are OK so long as it conforms to the spec'd size when completed!

Case closed!

Excellent find!

Next question: Is there a 1/16" set?
