wing stands

I still haven't figured out exactly what I should do about wing stands/jigs, I wanted to use the steel center post of my garage as one side, but it's too centrally located, and there's not really and good direction to run the wing panel without interfering with something else. I've come to the conclusion that the best bet is right down the center of the left bay of the garage. However, if I use floor to ceiling 4x4 style posts, the garage door will be permanently down for the duration of the wing work.

SO, I'd like to go with the steel style stands, but I don't know where to get my hands on the requisite metal! I can do the welding myself, but I need the materials.

Anyone got any clues on where to get some, or even better, perhaps you're done with a set of stands (I only need one wing's worth) that you could lend or sell me?

Hi Ian,

I had the same problem. Here's my solution which worked very well. After I got the jig built, I put Liguid Nails on the base and glued it to the floor. I've since finished my wings and took the jig apart. The liquid nails were easy to scrape off the concrete.

The length of your base would be shorter than mine since your building a RV-7.

Ian,

Use the center lally column! Make it the middle of your jig! Do what I did that is, make a "T" configuration out of it. Put a wing on each side of it!

Oh, and where to get the steel? Let your fingers do the walking.

I am sure you MUST have a local supplier within 30 minutes form your house.

hm, smitty's idea is a good one... CJ, I'd use the center post like you did if I could, but there's a dang car in the other half of the garage, and the stupid city won't let me park it outside.

I need to get in there and seriously clean out the garage and see what kind of room I'm gonna have. I'm almost starting to regret having built THREE 8x3 benches
