Why? There's nothing wrong with the round tube that comes with the kit...I just did them, and it's not a big deal to make them, and they are plenty strong.

$30 for flap rods??? :o

Not trying to argue at all Brian...if they were $15 for a pair, it wouldn't be so bad I guess. :)

Making them is easy, I just do not think the factory ones are up to snuff. By the time you tap them, they are too thin for my engineering mind. Having a flap fold up on short final is not something I want to experience. I know, I know, I know... Where is a case in the 6K flying RV's of this happening? Don't know but I do not want to be #1.

Vans sells these as well untapped for $12 bucks each. Thats $28 for the set after the $4 buck box charge. I'll give Avery the $2 to cut, drill and tap these on a lathe. It is worth it to me, plus they are good people.

I'll agree to that... 8) I know it's probably not significant, but I wonder what the difference in weight is.

Brian, I hear what you are saying and I don't mean to sound arguementative, but Van's sent that little tube because their engineering said it was good enough. I've never heard of a failure, and what more validation do you need of Van's design than that? I know, it's a personal choice -- build it the way YOU want to and I'll do the same. I'm just playing devil's advocate here. :)

Ya know, I was thinking more about this, and the hex tube would make sense if there was some side load on the tubes. For the flaps, there is only up and down force, even when they are fully down, it's still up and down. Plenty of strength there for that.

Just a thought...

Ain't homebuilding great? Guys I might be being overly critical of the stock tubes but like Brad said, that is the great thing about this stuff, the fact that we can do it the way we want, and I want the hex tubes :P

Thanks for all the input!

Maybe the problem isn't the wrong flap tube...

Post by RV9inIowa »

If you want a better flap pushrod, you should've bought a 9! Comes with a hex pushrod!! 8)

(I think it's even threaded...)

A lot of people have changed the standard rods to the hex rods, using the ones Vans sells for the 9. This is not uncommon as a number of people have felt that the original ones are marginal. I'm not sure if this was due to any failure, but Van's did change it on the 9.

By the way, the price from Avery is for a set of 2.

I used the hex rods on my RV-4. Only because the guy I bought the wing kit from lost the original flap linkage hardware. The hex rods work great by the way. They are tapped way inside so you can cut them to really short lengths and still have plenty of thread.

I think Vans uses them on the 9 because the 9 flap is so much larger.

If the Avery ones are truly $15 for a pair then that is all the much more better

What are they listed under??

Post by Bob Barrett »

I am just attempting to connect mine now and I can make the tubing work but I can get the Avery ones sent to me in a week for $15.00 a pair I will order them. My only Avery Tool Catoalog is 2006 and I can't find them listed there. Are they in 2007? and what are they listed as?

I'm curious to know how many sets of pushrods were ordered from Avery this week (presumably due to Brian's posts). I sure hope I can get my order in before they run out.

I made my F 659's today

Post by Bob Barrett »

Thursday 8/30/07 I started attempting to make an F-659 for my RV-6A and spent a couple of hours working on it, looking for materials etc. Today I finished the first one in about 20 minutes. Then since I had lots of material(which hopefully I won't find that I need for something else tomorrow) I made two additional ones in about 50 minutes. They appear to be adequate for my needs. First of all you need a good tap set and aluminum thread cutting oil. I fount that by removing the tap every quarter of an inch and blowing out the tube with airgun and cleaning the tap with the air gun and adding thread cutting oil to the tube it went pretty fast. I cut two additional lengths of tube and tapped both ends of each tube in less than 50 minutes. $15 for fifty minutes is better pay than my social securtity check gives me each month. Also it is not subject to Federal or MN Income taxes or the %7 MN Sales tax shipping charges. If you are biulding an RV-9 use the hex ones. If you earn over $25.00 an hour you can easily afford to buy them from my good friends at Avery. If you are retired I highly recomend you make your own! :)

PS. I went to install them in the weldment for the electric flaps which I carefully and painfully installed permantly last Wednesday. :bang: Guess what the RV-6 weldments have to be drilled our the 1/4" bolt. I did it carefully in the plane. My recomendation is that you drill the corret size before instlling the weldment in the fuselage.
