Sheet and Bar stock Q.

Hey all, I am a bit ashamed to have gotten this far along and have to ask a stupid question like this. I am willing to bet that I am not alone.

What prompts me to ask this question is, I cannot find the material called out as AS3-125x1 1/2x 5 1/16 for my empennage attach spacer.

I am wondering how this stock differs: AB4-125X1 1/2X(Length = whatever).

Q.1 - I know they are Aluminum Sheet and Aluminum Bar respectively, but if size is the same, does it matter?

Q.2 - What does the "3" in AS3 refer to and what does the "4" in AB4 refer to?

I'm gonna take a wild useless guess, and speculate that AS and AB might not be the same alloy!

Seems like the angle and bar stock are generally 6061, and the sheet is usually 2024-T3 alclad.

Hmmmm, Yup, the AB is 2024-T4 according to some I have in my hand.

AS is (if it is anything like the skins) T3.

Anyone else want in on this one?

I suppose the next question is can I substitute one for the other in the role of a spacer?

I knew that if I looked hard enough, it would turn up. I FOUND the AS3 part. It was tucked in a bag that wasn't labeled. I suspect it came within a Sub-Kit.

Anyways, can anyone confirm the "3" in AS3 is for T3 tempering and the "4" in AB4 is for T4 tempering?

I suspect it it the case.

I always thought that AB was short for Aluminum Bar, and AS was for Aluminum Sheet....

I can confirm for ya! Page 3-4 in your manual spells out the parts designations, and AS3 is for Aluminum Sheet T3, and AB4 is Aluminum Bar T4.

I was in section 5!

I knew it was in there someplace!

I rest easy knowing that you had to look for it too!

Seeing as I found the AS3 part and don't need to use the AB4 part, I am guessing that either one would be fine.

Van probably specs the AS3 because it is just a spacer and the AS is likely less costly.

More than likely, but I'm sure there's a degree of engineering in to each and every piece. It's AS3 for some reason!

I betcha AS3 is less expensive than AB4 times 10,000 kits!
