exhaust question
Guys:
First sorry for the cross post Spike (to the OTHER forum).
I would like to use one of the Power Flow tuned exhausts on the IO-360 I will put in my -7A and I was wondering if anyone has seen or done this, and if so was there a problem clearing the nose gear. It doesn't seem to be a problem on the Diamond (see: http://www.powerflowsystems.com/product ... d=2&pid=15_)
Also, how do you install a heat muff(s) on the Power Flow exhaust?
Antony

Probably more power I would imagine.

I'm curious too...why Power Flow? I'd be willing to bet that any of the four into one's, crossovers, Vetterman's will perform as good or better for less...

Power Flow's do work well in pretty much any certified airplane, but the RV exhaust's are all purpose designed and built for RV's.
Is there a known performance figure from an RV with Power Flow?
Genuinly curious here...

Okay, I will stop baiting you Spike.
I think I know your question Antony, without you (or Spike) actually asking it.
You want to know if there will be a performance increase by using the PF exhaust compared to a Vetterman or AWI system.
Am I right?
I think so.
Here is my take on it:
The PF system is a "tuned" system. The concept is derived from 2-strokes and basically uses the exhaust note as a source of power to scavenge the system clean of dormant gases.
The previous exhaust pulse provides a gas flow for which the next pulse is drawn out of the main pipe using the main pipe as a venturi.
This is a good concept and is nothing new. To install a PF system designed for just about any spammer would probably not fit inside a tightly cowled RV. I am not sure about this, just guessing. There is no need to try this exercise out in reality because the system would certainly cost more and given the fact that our Vetter and AWI systems take this type of gas scavenging idea concept into consideration, it probably WOULD NOT be beneficial from a power increasing perspective.
As far as mufflers and muffs are concerned, they are real estate hogs. Most RV guys consider them to be luxuries, as do I. OTOH, I want them BOTH! Can I have my cake and eat it too?
Hmmmm, I dunno? I sure am gonna try!
If you want to experiment with me, stay tuned... literally!

just a fit question
Actually John i am pretty sure a tuned exhaust will provide more power than the standard pipes, hence my interest. My big question though is will it fit in a 7A installation.

It SHOULD provide more power than a "standard" pipe, Antony.
Who said the Vett's or AWI pipes weren't "tuned" and are "standard" pipes?

...and to top off the "tuned" AWI pipes,

I was thinking of installing a Supertrapp muffler on the end with a turned down tip like the one in this catalog.

So, do you want to experiment with me or what?

schweet!
Johny -- that's awesome! Thanks a bunch. Now I need to take a look at that geometry to see if it will work with a nosewheeler.
I think Alan Judy has something like that turned down exhaust outlet on his plane. I will look for pics to post.
For the rest of you, we are airing the next episode of "Pimp This Plane" tonight at 8 pm. In this episode John installs ground effects in his 7 and a subwoofer in the baggage compartment and Antony shows how to do a 3 wheel hydraulic suspension and air horn that plays La Cucaracha.
