Anyone doing Traffic?
Is there anyone going to add TIS or TCAS to their birds?
I was thinking Garmin GTX-330 that has TIS, but $$$ ouch!
I also see the AFS is supporting or soon to be supporting Zaon.
I was wondering if any of you guys have either of these or even something different and can give some input. I want to install the AFS-3500EE and a GNS430W and would like something to input into these for a display.
Thanks

I am definitely doing Zaon.
I have problems picking out traffic and I plan on using technology to mechanically adapt for my Mk. I eyeball.
I dunno if I will put it on the AFS or the 496. Probably the AFS, I s'pose...

I have a GTX330 in the Cessna and it is worth every penny to me. I do plan on putting some equivalent technology in the RV, whatever is appropriate at the time.

Zaon limitations
So isn't the Zaon limited to displaying three planes? It seems that would be of limited value.

Yea me too, It's not my main concern. But Flying the KingAirs with the Ryan TCAD and the Garmin 530 and 430 and Avidyne EX500, etc. etc. It makes me wish I had the money and panel space (-8A) too have this stuff. Thats why I thought of Traffic alert, because of how nice it is in the E90s.Wicked Stick wrote:I'll probably do a Zaon traffic unit once I get flying.. It's something I can wait on for now.

I am not sure what the Garmin's limit is, but in busy airspace (like Boston or NY) I have seen at least 6 targets. In those cases the direction vector and the altitude difference are invaluable. It's also really handy to be able to change the range to bring the view in closer to get a good sense of who is nearby. Of course at the speed of some business jets one could argue that you should stay with a wider picture.
I usually have both GNS430s navigating with one displaying course and the other in TIS mode when in busy terminal areas. During cruise I have both navigating but one on the "nearest" page continuously doing updates.

I have been flying a friends Diamond with the Garmin 330 XPDR and traffic display on a 430 in the Atlanta area. I have to tell you how amazing this is... I never knew how busy the airspace was until you actually have traffic onboard. It is really nice when ATC calls you to report traffic at 2 o'clock and you can reply "We have the traffic on our screen".
I am now sold on the TIS traffic option. I considered going with the Zaon system but since I have to buy a XPDR anyway it is cheaper to just upgrade to the Garmin 330. The price difference between the 327 and the 330 is ~$1600 and the Zaon unit is ~$1700.

Guys, just remember that the Garmin 330 TIS only works in terminal areas...it's a GREAT tool to have onboard to display on a screen, but it does not work outside terminal service areas. That's not to say it won't work outside Class B and C areas, it will, but not too far away from them.
Zaon and Monroy work everywhere, but don't display a location on a screen.

The more $ Zaon will if connected to a 396/495/496, GRT or AFS system. It has some pretty wide tolerance on the exact azimuth but it gets you looking in the right direction.cjensen wrote: Zaon and Monroy work everywhere, but don't display a location on a screen.

That is correct, though I will say that it has worked more places than I thought it was. Though in the course of full disclosure out here on the east coast it has lots of support. The "not working everywhere" idea was ok for us as it works 90% of the places I fly, and the terminal area is where it is generally the most beneficial IMO. Its also a bunch cheaper than a true active system like the avidyne stuff.cjensen wrote:Guys, just remember that the Garmin 330 TIS only works in terminal areas...it's a GREAT tool to have onboard to display on a screen, but it does not work outside terminal service areas. Check out this video! I am sure that the Enigma will also support this soon if not already. AFS and GRT are doing it now.

Found out by watching this video that the azimuth resolution is actually better when used this way. It is within +- 10° instead of +-22°. Which makes this even better when connected to a display that can connect to a TIS reciever.
It sounds like this thing will connect to anything that can recieve TIS transmissions because they simulate the TIS data out of the unit. Its actual data is based on the ZAON unit, they just repackage it into TIS data. That means that most likely one could also connect this to a 430/530 and get traffic on it as well.

Brantel, yes... the high dollar Zaon will display on the X96's.
Something else that is good to know is that the AFS displays with mapping will accept Zaon packets as well!
I am thinking of doin it!
