I present N155BK, Aurora.
Image
Aurora is the Roman name for the Goddess of the Dawn. Her name simply means "the dawn, daybreak, or sunrise". Her name may be related to Latin aurum, meaning "gold", through the shared idea of brightness.
Ovid tells of Her in his Metamorphoses: he describes Her as being ever-young, and the first to awake, so that She may bring the light of day in Her chariot which She rides into the sky ahead of the Sun. She has a purple mantle that spreads out behind Her as She rides; and She is said to scatter roses and flowers before Her. Others describe Her with great white wings, like Eos. She is said to be the mother of the four winds; though this part of Her legend is Greek, one variant spelling of Her name, Aurura, has the meaning of "breeze or wind".
An aurora is of course also the name for the phenomenon of the northern (or southern) lights, great displays of shifting colors in the skies of the far north and south. Aurora borealis is said to mean "red dawn of the north", and was given its name by Galileo Galilei, the scientist who discovered the moons of Jupiter. Aurorae are caused by solar particles interacting with gasses in the Earth's atmosphere. The Earth's magnetic field funnels these particles to the poles (both north and south), where they emit light, in colors ranging from red to yellow-green to blue and violet, depending on the atmospheric molecule the particles come in contact with. They are generally said to look like shifting curtains or veils of light, evoking Aurora's purple cloak blowing behind Her as She rides across the sky.

Happy Birthday Aurora

I think you should have an artist paint that on the bottom of your plane.
Or maybe on the vertical stab/rudder would work too.

Not sure there is that kind of talent in Townsend, but it has crossed our mind.

Congrats Brian for your RV finally getting the pink slip! I can't wait to hear of its first flight! I couldn't help but laugh a little at the subject of this thread. Everyone who has "finished" an RV really knows it is never really finished!

Aint that the truth brotha ! I've got about 6 hours now and have changed out a leaking fuel pump, fixed a trim issue, added a small rudder wedge and still need to get my wheel pants finished.

Hopefully I can start adding the fun stuff afterwards... smoke, paint... the list goes on :).

Heck, I wouldn't mind some wrenching post pink-slip! It's the crawling under the panel that sucks! But I really do hope your airplane is indeed "finished", Brian. You did a stellar job on it. Wheel pants and leg fairing finished already? I don't have the motivation to do mine since it is just such a blast to fly. Daylight savings time switches this weekend, so I hope to get in some early AM flights next week to start pounding out my 40 hours!

Beautiful day today....As I put Aurora back together in prep for her maiden voyage.
I got a hold of fellow RV'r who lives south of me about 1 hr(car) and ask him if I could some time in his RV-7A to regain my skills. He said "sure, how's tomorrow look, it's only 20minutes by RV to your place." So hopefully I can get proficient tomorrow and then...........who knows what might happen.

Thanks for the update Brian. I have been wondering what was happening out there to the West! If it wasn't a day's flight to your place I would try to talk Dick into flying out there. Keep us posted.

Spike the date today is 11/10/10 and Brian sent the e-mail at 8:00 AM CSTM 11/10/10. You have to live West of the Eastern Tim Zone to understand how the real United States lives! Thanks again Spike for all you do for this website! How is the other project coming and I don't mean the RV?

so close, but not today. Woke up to beautiful sunny skies.

Hans arrived with his -7A about 1000. We briefed and then went flying in his ship. I was a little tenative, but didn't overcontrol like I used to. Gentle is the proper term for RV flying, felt good to be back in the air. after I got comfy and was happy with how things were, He took the controls and dropped her to 200agl and tried to chase the twisting river at 155kts, nice little fighter plane. Made me a little nervous as we neared the big power lines, but a quick pull and we were climbing 2000fpm. I mentioned all the geese that have been moving south and he decided best to fight another day. Back at the airport we flew many landings, each one different than the one before. He flies faster(77kts on final) than I'm used to, but works for him. Last one I said let s try 72kts, I liked it a lot better, but we dipped below 70 on short final and you could really feel the sink rate increase. Kinda plopped it on, but the distance was a fraction of the previous landings. Weather was going down hill and ceilings were dropping, snow falling to the west. So, I topped off his tanks and he beat feet for Bozeman. Thanks Hans. I should be ready.

Weather is supposed to be good tomorrow. But no promises

Actually both of the projects are going quite well. Pretty sad though that it takes less time to build a human being than it takes to build a plane. This (rv) project is going to drive me into the ground... ugg

Great news on the flying the 7 today. You will do fine when the time comes. Keep us informed on how things progress!
