both my youngest daughter and I were feeling ill for the past couple of days, but she went back to school today and I decided to get out also. I thought a short easy trip would be best, so I headed for Yellow Springs and John Bryan State Park and a couple of easy MTB trails. I decided to skip breakfast and just take a coffee and eat one of my Cliff bars in Yellow Springs, then off to the MTB park. there is a big hill to the park that I have never been able to climb without pushing the bike some distance (at least 30 attempts to climb it). it is medium grade at the bottom and top, and a steep grade at the middle switch back. today, I was able to climb the hill with almost ease and I was shocked and amazed. what the hell is going on with my body. did the coffee and Cliff bar make the difference? I don't know, but next time I will repeat the sequence. on the lower portion of the climb, a nice-looking lady in a SUV pulled up beside and rolled the passenger window down and asked me if I wanted to hang on to the car and be pulled up the hill. I thought about it, but there was no place to hang on. I am glad I didn't try. today was one of those perfect Ohio Fall days, 2C in the morning, warming to 20C with low winds, about 8 miles of MTB trails. it doesn't get any better than today! the colors and the feel of the woods....

these are very low costs trips with a lot of bang for the buck as I was out for most of the day. a 20-minute flight sure beats an hour or more of driving. I may have used 7 gallons (Edit: Since this is a routine run for me, I wanted to determine the exact amount of fuel I used, so I filled up the tank to measure it, which was 5.75 gallons.) for the round trip. traffic on the freeway on the way home, bumper to bumper.

back to Millersburg to see if it was as nice as I thought it was before, yep it was. it started with a frozen pizza the night before and ended with one afterwards, but I ate something healthy in between. you cannot live on frozen pizza and beer, that's a fact, and you will die if you try! the colors were amazing, some almost unbelievable, and the climb out of the valley back to the airport wasn't too bad. the Amish apple dumpling with ice cream was the bomb. a nice lady met me there.

OSU trains a lot of pilots around NW Columbus. I saw OSU6, OUS35, OUS54, etc. all landing at nearby airports. stay high enough to avoid them.

adding time to this engine oil. it looks OK. going to 100 hrs.

Bloomington Indiana.... very nice. it's not a 5-star biking destination yet, but it will be with the planned development of their biking trails. I only have good things to say about Bloomington. Indiana University Bloomington was "a lot" more than I expected, much bigger and grander, with nice architecture and a superb art museum. Bloomington converted a rail switchyard into an amazing park with high quality facilities... pickle ball courts, basketball, skateboard park, dog park, greenspace, etc. Gables Bagels next to the University and the Korean K-bap restaurant were excellent. I wasn't very hungry but wanted to try K-bap since it had a 4.9 rating, and it was very good. I spent $11 there. I will not try to explain it, but I felt a good vibe at Bloomington.

it's nice flying West in the AM and East in the PM to avoid sun in your eyes...

a problem I have is in the Fall and Winteri is that I need to shed layers as the day warms but where to stash them? I am trying the Olliepack seat bag from Swift Industries. it's just a large under the seat bag. test rides were positive. it has several straps to secure the bag, so I'll probably load the bike without the seat post and then drop the seat post on when I arrive. without the seat post, the folded bike weight is less than 20 lb. a friend gave me a Zombie Ice, double IPA, to try. wow, it is spot on with subtle nuances that I did not expect, 3floyds. way more than I expected. he was right on.

fueled up, ready to launch into the nice Fall weather. travel and riding my bike... it's a type of job, one where you can turn any direction you want and go there!

Louisville KY is a five-star biking destination with high quality biking infrastructure. catch the bike trail across the street from Bowman airport (a 1/4 pie shaped class D, within 3 miles of Muhamad Ali International, be attentive because it is very busy). Louisville, LOU, is 39 minutes from HAO, and has better biking trails than Cincy. trails and roads were well marked, and the drivers were very courteous. Fante's Coffee house was really something, it's a destination. I visited McAlpine locks on the other side of Louisville. Cherokee park was very good, designed by the same guy that did Central Park in New York city. I hope you enjoy the photos as I did the trip today. airplane travel and biking, it is a type of job. when I got home the wife said don't sit down, let's go for a walk.... she was happy and wanted to talk.

rewritten by AI, so I don't think I did too badly. Rewritten by AI, I believe the result wasn't too bad.

Cherokee Park was excellent, crafted by the same designer responsible for Central Park in New York City. I trust you'll enjoy the photos as much as I enjoyed my trip today. Airplane travel and biking—it's a job of its own kind. When I returned home, my wife eagerly suggested, "Don't sit down, let's go for a walk..." She was happy and wanted to chat.

I flew commercially to determine if Minneapolis really is the most bikeable city in the USA. After a few days of cycling, I believe it might well be. The Zizzo bike fits and traveled fine in a suitcase. I have nothing but good things to say about Minneapolis and St Paul.

Several inquiries have been made about where to find this dish. It's the Walleye Benedict from Lucky's 13 Pub in Mendota, MN, available only on weekends. It tastes even better than it appears. Highly recommended. cost = $14 and the fish was huge.

Columbus, Indiana... a picturesque autumn day. The new green chili biscuit with gravy side at Hangar 5 restaurant was delightful, priced at $2.99, WITH an egg. Now, that's a deal. At last, a place that serves excellent gravy. I will soon return just for the gravy because it was that good. The airport introduced some new bikes; they performed well, albeit heavier than the folding bike. It's convenient that the bike trail starts and finishes at the airport, encircling the entire city. Overall, a very pleasant day and I burned some calories.

Flying and biking, it's a type of job. Fire up the CAD and start the 3D printers before you leave so the parts are ready when you return.

Hopefully, I am doing a good job providing incentive to learn CAD and 3D printing. :)

Happy Veteran's Day. Today was a day of pleasant weather in SW Ohio, with brown leaves starting to fall from the trees. There was no flying, only riding. I sought a route from the airport to the Indian Fusion restaurant I had heard about. It was 10 miles away with no direct bike path, but I managed to find a way by connecting some trails. The route was much more delightful than expected, passing through neighborhoods and a couple of broken paths thru tree lines. I captured a lovely photo of a train, which made me feel youthful again. The Lamb Vindaloo at the Indian restaurant was superb, and the conversation with the staff was heartwarming; they were wonderful people. I'm certainly looking forward to bringing my wife there. If you are in SW Ohio, Indian Fusion on 747 has a 4.8 rating on Google, that's about as good as it gets. I'll vouch for the rating as it seems correct. Their spice levels are 0 - 6 and I chose 5. I was OK with that.

It was really nice riding from my airport to my neighborhood. A very pleasant day. Tomorrow I will fly somewhere to ride.

Piqua Ohio, home of Hartzel, riding to Troy Ohio. It's cooler today with a bit of wind. I oiled the exhaust ball joint remotely. I opted not to pull my cowl to tape my ACOC; instead, I installed 2-inch air dams. CHT's came up but the oil temp stayed amber. Just 70 miles north, most of the leaves have already fallen. The pizza was too floppy for my liking, but the salad was enjoyable. Overall, it was a pleasant day, and I managed to get some biking miles in.

A trip to Dayton, OH, is not complete without stopping by the Grist restaurant for their world-famous meatball sub, followed by a visit to the Art Museum. Grist boasts a 4.7 rating on Google, which I believe is well-deserved. They prepare fresh pasta and pizza dough on-site, offering an array of amazing dishes. It's a destination eatery in Dayton, known for its delightful desserts. The art museum offers a vast and extensive collection that is sure to please. A trash can was tipped over near the Art Museum, so I took the initiative to clean it up. A delightful day with ideal temperatures of 8°C in the morning, warming up to 13°C.

Since it was a brief flight, I executed the procedure turn and the ILS 29 localizer (with the glide path out of service) into HAO airport. It is clear that APRS can pinpoint my location on the ground.

Wings of Freedom

The hum of the engine was a constant companion, a steady reminder of the machine beneath me—a homebuilt airplane that I had spent countless hours assembling, painting, and dreaming about. Today, though, the machine was more than just metal and parts; it was freedom. I had always longed for the sky, and now, with my hands firmly gripping the controls, I was soaring through it.

As the wheels left the runway, the earth beneath me seemed to fall away, replaced by an endless horizon and a patchwork of fields and towns below. The world, for a moment, felt small. I could see the curve of the earth on the far horizon, the outline of distant mountains framing the blue sky like a painting come to life. I was alone in the cockpit, but never had I felt more connected to the world around me.

Clouds drifted lazily by, soft and billowy, like cotton candy in the vastness of the sky. I pushed the throttle forward, feeling the surge of power as the little airplane climbed higher, slicing through the air like a bird. There was no rush, no hurry. The world had slowed down to match the rhythm of the flight—smooth, steady, and free.

I was on a journey—not to any specific destination, but to the joy of travel itself. Flying had become my way of seeing the world from a new perspective. Every flight brought something new—a town to explore, a familiar road to revisit, or even a new horizon to chase. Today, I was heading toward a small lakeside town that I had heard about in passing. It wasn't on any map I had studied, but that's part of the thrill—leaving the well-worn paths behind and venturing into the unknown.

As I neared the town, I circled a few times, surveying the land below. A sense of accomplishment filled me—here I was, hundreds of feet above ground, navigating my very own creation through the open sky. The feeling was surreal. Each rivet, every wire, every adjustment I had made to the aircraft had led to this moment.

I landed gently on a small strip, the wheels barely making a sound as they touched down. The air was fresh, and the sun was high, casting its golden glow over everything. I climbed out of the cockpit, stretching my legs and taking in the beauty of the landscape before me. A few friendly locals greeted me as I unpacked my gear—a bike snug in the baggage area, ready to take me further into the town.

Biking was the perfect way to complement my flight. The freedom of cycling through a new place, wind in my hair, feeling the pulse of a town that was still new and unexplored—it was the kind of adventure that made me feel alive. I pedaled through quiet streets, past colorful houses, and down winding paths leading to the sparkling lake. Every turn brought a new sight, a new experience, and a new conversation with someone who had a story to share. I stopped for a bite to eat at a small cafe, the food simple but perfect. Fresh bread, cheese, and a cup of strong coffee—things that grounded me in the here and now.

As the day stretched on, I met more people. A fellow traveler who had just returned from a cross-country cycling trip, a young couple planning their wedding near the water. Every encounter was a reminder of how beautiful life was when you allowed yourself to step outside the ordinary, to embrace the unexpected.

By late afternoon, I returned to my plane, the sun beginning its descent in the sky. I had flown here for the simple joy of exploring, and now I would fly back with memories of new friends, the beauty of a place I had never planned on seeing, and a deep sense of satisfaction. The airplane's engine roared to life once again, and I lifted off into the fading light.

The clouds, now tinged with pink and gold, drifted lazily by, and I felt weightless, floating above it all. The joy of flying wasn't just in the flight itself, but in the freedom to choose your own path, to embrace the journey and all the surprises it held.

The world, once again, was small, and I was free to explore it at my own pace. In the cockpit, surrounded by the beauty of the world below, I knew that no matter where I went, the sky would always be home.

how's that for a Chat-gbt4 story with these inputs? except we don't have any mountains around here. :)

write a story about the joy of flying a homebuilt airplane. freedom, clouds, floating, accomplishment, beauty, travel, destination biking fun, all day, good food, meeting new people, having fun

Yikes, I'm using all my retirement funds on folding bikes! I purchased another one before the Trump tariffs take effect. I couldn't resist this deal, but I'm not certain what I'll receive since it's not directly from Zizzo, but from a Chinese seller on AliExpress. It could be a factory reject they are dumping. The Zizzo price for this bike = $500. Deal and wheel.

I never lock my bikes when I park them. Sometimes, I'll remove the pedals and lower the seat before placing it in the bike rack. Initially, I was worried about theft, but I've come to realize that these bikes aren't typically targeted by thieves.

that will bring me to four Zizzo's:
1. heavy duty Forte camping bike (upgraded tires)
2. Liberte converted to speedster (thin tires and other mods)
3. Liberte stock all arounder, used for mountain bike trails and packed in airline luggage, the beater bike
4. new Liberte stock, a backup for #3
