Duckworks Landing Lights
Does anyone out there have any idea how hot the Duckworks landing lights get in use? I am just wondering if I need to wory about heat sensitive components in near proximity to the lights.

Pat,
They are made from an automotive fog light. The quartz lamp, I am sure... gets quite hot.
The area outside the ribs and behind the support plate will be mostly unaffected.
What are you looking to do? What is your concern?

CJ,
My outboard leading edge bay is extremely close to my auxiliary fuel tanks. Check this link to see what I am talking about: http://napwars.com/RV-8HTML/Fuel.htm
I am planning to put a small section of rib just outboard of the end of the tank to use as a mounting for the duckworks light. The main section of the duckworks mounting plate will have to be shortened of course, but that's not a big deal. It's having that mounting so close to the end of a fuel tank that worries me. I could mount a small computer fan to blow cool air between the end of the tank and the light mounting, but I want to avoid making things any more complicated than they really have to be.

Pat,
Ummmm WOW!
Yah, I am not nearly that motivated, ambitious, smart or willing to take that much time figuring out all those details on my first ship.
Is this your first build? That is certainly an advanced modification!
Anywhooooo, Internal temeratures I would estimate to be no higher than those imposed by direct sunlight in a high ambient day.
You should be able to proceed as planned, I suppose. Narrowing the standard DW bracket and prosealing the bracket in place should be fine. This would limit adjustability of the lamp's beam, but with access to the outboard end still available you should be ok.
You *may* want to just order one DW kit and an extra lens. This way, you will have plans, a pattern and stuff to copy for the other side. The exact fog light is on the shelf at Walmart. I saw it last week!
Take pics! I would like to see this exolve!

Pat, this is the DW cutout you will need to make:

You can use this template twice.
Then, fab up one of these based on your needs:

...and install them as required.

Hope this helps.

P.S. It's SNOWING here now!!! First snow of the year!!!

CJ,
I do indeed have my Duckworks light kits on hand already.
Since one picture is worth a thousand words, here is the bay in which the lights will be installed:

To actually mount the light frame plate, I will install part of another rib next to the end of the tank. Here is a picture of a complete rib in this location:

Once I get everything figured out, I will cut this rib down to just enough to use the standard Duckworks mounting screws. The light frame plate will have to be cut down enough to fit between these ribs, but that is a fairly easy operation.
This is my first complete airplane project, however I do have fairly substantial experience with aircraft design issues (as well as a degree in aerospace engineering), so I just couldn't resist taking on this modification.
There are some pictures available at the following link:

More will come as I get more done.

Duckworks landing lights
The H3 bulb in standard form is 55w: also available is the 100w, and now one can get this in 130w, has anyone fitted the 130w, any problems ?
