Before... I cut the holes with the LE clecoed into position. Then I took it off and messed with the ribs and mounting brackets.

Worked well for me!

wingtip landing lights

Post by aparchment »

What do you guys think about wingtip landing lights. I like the idea, but I am concerned about the effect on the plexi lens and position light wiring of the heat they will generate.

Thoughts?

i think your only option if you go this way, is the creative air product. i was planning one going with the tip combo, but i don't like how the creative air light system looks. so, it was a matter of aesthetics for me. i was also concerned about heat and distortion of the lense, so i figured it was easier in the long run to use the duckworks lights, and use the tips for strobe and nav only.

here's a GREAT looking setup, that if i build my own nav LEDs, it will look like this...but again no room for landing lights. this is what moved me to the duckworks lights.

i am blown away with the quality of jeff's installation. not sure if it meets the lighting requirments of the FAA, but if tweaked a bit, it would work. and it sure is pretty!! 8)

Antony, I am not aware of anyone having problems with the Creativair setup and that was not the reason why I didn't choose them. I feel like there is too much going on in the tip if you cram all that stuff in there. I know it fits fine, but I like the Duck setup better.

Chad, that LED system of Jeff's is the best looking one on the market!

Sounds like we are in agreement with these components!

BTW, use the Dremel to cut the holes in the LE's. I saw the other forum and people were suggesting everything from carbide toothed beavers to machete's!

The dremel with an abrasive wheel is the tool for the job. Once it is rough cut, a carbide side cutter and drum sander finish it off quite nicely!

YUP! i stare at those tips all the time! i've contacted the company that produces the LED's that he used for information. i REALLY like how it looks. i think the company is called Luxor, or something like that.

Nice looking tip light setup Chad! Good catch. I will download that photo and put it in my ideas folder.

John, I like the machete idea for cutting the light openings. I love precision instruments. In fact I will be using a machete to cut my canopy.

Good call on the dremel. I am always suprised when people say they find the dremel useless in their plane building endeavors. It is incredibly useful in my opinion. Perhaps that comes from my model building days.

Back to work on my spars!
