Yeah, thats kind of what I was thinking. It looks like a really sweet unit, but darn, its north of $3K. Add a few more thousand to it and you can get a panel mount PFD from Advanced to include an engine monitor. The one thing that I see that Garmin has right now is a better graphics presentation, at least to my eye. It is not going to take long however for the others to catch up.

How are the mechanics of flying approaches with the MGL? How well do they have the procedures down?

And for that matter, I prefer the digital readouts versus the simulated gauges. Gauges, even simulated ones, tear up a lot of panel (or display) space versus a simple digital readout.

I don't think one could "technically" fly a legal GPS approach with the Enigma (it isn't a TSO'd unit, is it?). Just messing with approaches on my 420W shows that a true, documented GPS approach is much, much more than a runway intercept with glideslope, which is what the GLS function of the device seems to provide. Even the MGL manual says to not fly it in zero visibility or without some other means of navigation. I am certainly NOT knocking it -- it looks like a GREAT instrument! Just don't be fooled by it having a WAAS receiver -- my wife's Garmin running GPS watch has a WAAS receiver on it, but I wouldn't fly an approach with it
Bear in mind, I am not an instrument pilot, and I have been known to be completely full of crap at times:) Just be extremely conscious of the use of any flight instrument for purposes outside of the stated manufacturers intent...my $0.02, but it is probably worth less than that

I gotcha, bud! I just didn't want you to end up being a smokin' hole somewhere!cjensen wrote:You're absolutely correct Rob. I would NEVER use the Enigma as a sole means of navigation on an approach. It is a fantastic supplement tho...I have no aspirations to fly my RV IFR anyway, but it's neat that it has the capability, tho not legal to use it for an actual WAAS approach.

VFR Advantage?
For us VFR pilots, what is the advantage of the 696? I understand that is has lots of IFR chart stuff. Does it have sectional maps? Without the sectionals, why would a VFR pilot want to pay over $3k for one?
Thanks,
Thanks,
It seems that this device is targeting the Bonanza and twin crowd. A GPS with sectionals on it. Now that I'd LOVE to see. I know there is already ways to do that but a nice stable device with downloadable sectionals (and TACs) would be cool.
