Rib fit ?

Post by tshort »

Anyone had any issues with aligning the holes on the little "tabs" on the ribs? When clecoing the L wing together this PM several of the W-711 ribs did not align at all on the bottom of the spar flange and required some creative bending to align the holes. I quadruple checked to make sure it was the correct rib, position, etc.

Anyway, made a little progress today:

Thomas,

Looks GREAT!

If that photo is representative of your worst alignment problem, you don't have a problem.

Get some 1/16", 3/32" and 1/8" pin punches and bend them back into position with the punches. You will certainly need to do so on the leading edges and tanks!

Are you doing both wings simultaneously?

Oh, and of course... as you already know I am sure, when it comes time to drill the skins to the ribs and spars...

Put a cleco in one of those holes, drill the other one... then alternate the procedure.

This will keep that rib in alignment so yu don't drill a figure 8 hole in the rib.

Yep, building both together. All the main ribs are flanged, fluted, and deburred.
Just gotta drill this one, cleco and drill the other, then comes priming...

Hole Alignment

Thomas:

Those wings look great. Remember the awls that we used? Get a couple from Sears. They'll line those holes right up.
