tentative first steps

Post by papakeith »

I've placed my order with Vans.

for a tool box project.

a very, very minimal investment to see if I want to pursue this airplane building thing. I've a feeling I'll enjoy it.

CJ, you do realize I'll be knocking on you garage door when I get the kit in don't you? :)

that's great papakeith! i did two training kits before ordering my emp kit. they didn't have the toolbox when i started...i think that is a great idea for a training kit. even if you don't end up building...don't worry you will...you have a great little carry around toolbox! 8)

my two training kits have been sentenced to my backyard for corrosion testing. they will sit out there until i'm done with my airplane, and we'll just have a looksey on the dreaded corrosion issue.

Am I the only one who finds that statement a little more than amusing?

I totally mangled my first "training project"... everything was going really nicely (I even alodined and primed some of the parts) until I started actually riveting, at which point the whole thing sort of exploded. It actually made a "sproinggggg" sound now that I think about it. In the end I think I had to go to -5 rivets all around to hold it together. -5s and duct tape. And chewing gum.... and...well... I'm just glad it isn't actually part of the plane is all I'm sayin'.
:D

PK, you'll have a blast with the tool kit... I ordered one a couple weeks ago and gave it to my father... I'm not saying I couldn't make it explode too (after all, I've had some practice now) but he's not having any trouble with it. :)

PK, you are welcome here anytime! When you get the kit bring it on over. We can assemble it here with my tools.

You're a lucky man, PK. Why, I've heard rumors of people spending $35 on a practice kit only to find out they need $2000 worth of tools to put it together...

Sounds like good deal to me . You get the kit and John can show you the ins and outs of the tools. That kind of personal help is priceless. Yep it is true you'll need a few special tools to put the practice kits together. You really should have the short list of tools before starting a training kit unless of course you're going over to Johns, then you just use his stuff.

That was me. :(

OTOH, selecting and buying the tools was almost as fun as blowing up the training project. Who says guys don't like to shop? :)

No doubt about it, the training project is a weed out trick.

It is the best thing that ever happened to the Van's Product Line.

I agree that I'm pretty lucky to have John near by. Not knowing me from Adam he opened his garage to me and showed me his project. That alone is something that many wouldn't be willing to do.

Between RV6junkie and captain_john, I'm sure to suceed if I take on this project.

CJ,

Bring PapaKeith with you the next time you come and visit my 8 project.
I'm sure he'll enjoy looking at the fuselage stage I'm at right now.

Glenn, not sure who said it. It was on the Discovery channel and I had all I could do to write the quote down in time. I liked it too, as you can see!
